Understanding Napier’s Water Situation

Many residents have experienced low water pressure and occasional water outages in Napier over the past few months. These incidents have raised understandable questions about how the town’s water system works and what factors are contributing to these disruptions.

Napier’s water supply is based on groundwater from boreholes, which is treated and stored in municipal reservoirs before being distributed through a gravity-fed system. Because the system relies on a limited number of boreholes and relatively small reservoirs, it can be vulnerable to equipment failures, high demand, and periods of peak water use.

Recent outages were linked to borehole pump failures and critically low reservoir levels, while the municipality has also indicated that high water demand and other operational pressures have contributed to the strain on the system.

To improve long-term stability, the Cape Agulhas Municipality has recently advertised a tender for the construction of an additional 1.5 million litre reservoir in Napier, which should help increase storage capacity and provide a buffer during peak demand or infrastructure disruptions.
